About me and my work

23 year-old Julia DeConcini is an Arizona native, who is currently studying photography at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Growing up between a family cattle ranch in rural Mexico and her home in Tucson, she was fundamentally imprinted by the natural landscape and human structures of that region. Steadily engaged in arts and crafts as far back as she can recall, she has always felt a strong resonance between the things she creates and the physical/cultural landscape of the Southwest, even after her relocation to Washington state. There she has been actively and happily immersed in her community, collaborating with other artists, showing her work in local art shows, and curating at the Black Front Gallery. She was also awarded a year-long internship in Evergreen's photography center.

Approximately a year prior to her internship, Julia began experimenting with film and darkroom techniques. Seeing a decline in the use of film in art, media, and everyday photography, she wanted to explore the unique and irreproducible aspects of printing from film. She began creating non-duplicable photographs that solely utilize black-and-white darkroom procedures, such as selective development, multiple exposures, chemical washes and staining, hand-toning with photo dyes, and other secret trickery. She became deeply immersed in her pursuit of further understanding darkroom techniques and pushing their limits, going so far as to design and build an 11' tall photo enlarger to create the pieces displayed in this exhibition. She continues her inquiry in this direction.
